Pedrosa grabs 'unbelievable' podium

Monday, 10th March 2008

"For the first time I understand the meaning and the legend of HRC and I'm so proud to be part of this" - Dani Pedrosa.

Dani Pedrosa couldn't hide his delight after grabbing an 'unbelievable' podium finish during Sunday's season-opening Qatar Grand prix night race.

On paper it was nothing to special, but the Spaniard came into the event having missed most of pre-season testing due to a fractured hand - while Honda's 2008 RC212V had struggled so much in recent testing that two '07s were flown to Losail for evaluation by Pedrosa and team-mate Nicky Hayden.

Pedrosa eventually opted to race the '08, which he had qualified eighth on the grid - before rocketing straight into the lead at turn one after a dream getaway from the floodlit grid.

The 2007 MotoGP World Championship runner-up led the first four laps, slipped to fourth at mid-distance, then fought back to secure third place behind winner Casey Stoner and runner-up Jorge Lorenzo.

"Tonight's result is unbelievable, we didn't expect this, so I'm very happy," smiled Dani, who ran out of fuel on the way back to the pits. "Seven days ago I was almost last in the tests here but my team have worked really hard, bringing both 2007 and 2008 bikes here and making many changes, they've been fantastic.

"For the first time I understand the meaning and the legend of HRC and I'm so proud to be part of this. They gave me a competitive bike and the Michelin tyres worked really good and I did my best on track but without them I couldn't have been able to make it.

"My hand was quite bad from the middle of the race to the end, I couldn't brake perfectly because my hand was shaking all the time but I was able to finish the race and this is the most important thing because the hand should be in better condition at the next race.
