Kawasaki mechanic, Jerome Galland, found himself involved in a race of a different kind on Monday, after receiving a phone call informing him that his partner Ludivine had just gone into labour.
No problem normally, but Ludivine was in hospital in France, whereas Jerome was in the middle of the desert in Qatar!
After receiving the call at 11.30am, the father to be made a mad dash to the airport, where he made it onboard the first flight out to Europe with literally seconds to spare.
Seven hours later he departed the aircraft in Munich and caught a connecting flight to Barcelona, arriving at 9.35pm the same evening. The final 280 kilometres from Barcelona to the hospital in Beziers he travelled by rental car.
On his arrival at the hospital, the now physically exhausted Jerome was disappointed to discover he'd missed the birth of his daughter Iloa by just four hours.
Weigning in at a healthy 3kg, baby Iloa was born at 8.22pm, while Jerome was in the air between Munich and Barcelona.
But his disappointment was soon forgotten once he got to meet his newborn daughter for the first time.
"She is the most beautiful baby in the world," declared the very proud father.
But Jerome will have to wait to celebrate the birth in style, as he travels back to Qatar on Thursday to prepare Anthony West's Ninja ZX-RR machines for the opening free practice session of the 2008 season on Friday night.
The Frenchman is nothing if not dedicated!
The Kawasaki Racing Team would like to wish Jerome and Ludivine congratulations on the birth of their baby daughter.
